The Pit

Posted by admin in General

“You’ll sleep your life away in that pit,” my mum used to say to me (she was working for an immigration advice service at the time, and this angered her, as the job entailed lots of early mornings: guess who she took it out on?), back before I became a business man of the world.
I didn’t understand her for the first sixteen years of my life, and when I finally did get to understand her I spent the nest few years rebelling, saying it wasn’t so.
But it was so, of course, it was very MUCH so. Because magic happens early in the morning, and it’s the kind of magic which only can happen early: birds come out, sing, dance on the grass, bath in the birdbaths, and the world wakes up to a brand new day. Walking outside for the first time very early, when this revelation occurred to me, I felt the mounting pressure on my shoulders of all those mornings gone before me wasted in my pit.
So, from that moment on I decided I would, at least three times per week, drag myself outside before work and see the day evolve again. It didn’t work. At first I managed to do it twice a week for a month, and then it dropped to once. Why? Because I love my “pit” of course. How can you not? The pit is warm and loving: it is a friend.
The outside, on the other hand, is a cold hand shake, as sudden and shocking in the winter as a walk off a short pier into icy waters that make the genitals ride up around ones neck in agonizing pain and misery. But don’t let me put you off: the mornings are great, it’s just that some of us are better at appreciating them than others…
