The Gold Beauty

Do you remember being a boy, going to buy a bike with your dad? (If you were never a boy then don’t panic; I’m sure this could be applied to girls, too.)In my opinion it’s a right of passage that no boy should miss out on.
The first time I went with dad to buy a bike was particularly memorable: neither me nor dad knew what a good bike was, even though my dad did his best to pretend that this was not the case. The sign inside the door said best bikes for sale and it wasn’t mucking about! These were some of the finest metallic steeds that I had ever set eyes upon! They were chrome beauties…blue beauties…red ones and yellow.
But the one I had my eye on, from the moment we walked through the door, was the shining golden beauty in the corner. I will never forget that bike: it had the world’s widest handlebars, all kinds of plastic bits on it that screamed PROFESSIONAL and was clearly the kind of bike that could only ever bring pleasure.
And pleasure it did indeed bring…Those were some good times. Me with my matching golden gloves and matching golden-striped helmet, racing down the road, having the time of my life… Even though I eventually bent in two, just after I had suddenly become three dimensional and gained a few stone with the advent of puberty, I didn’t regret spending my life savings on it. I will always remember it as one of the best adventures of my life bar none: the adventure that opened up the possibilities that were there if you were just willing to take a punt.
